The trend for pared-back, simple living is going to be bigger than ever in 2014, with natural materials such as cotton, wood, stone and metal, influencing lots of the new high street collections. Take inspiration from a back-to-basics approach and decorate your bedroom in a simple yet stylish way. Keep floorboards natural or whitewash them, then paint your walls a soft putty colour inspired by nature – think pebble grey, or mushroom. Place simple, woven rugs made of raffia or wool on the floor for warmth, then shop for chunky, rustic furniture made from raw, unfinished wood. Look for reclaimed pieces that retain all the charm of aged wood. Keep your bedlinen simple – plain white cotton or linen – and invest in a few porcelain accessories such as lamps or vases for an elegant, unfussy look.

This 2014 bedroom trend is a new take on country. Decorate walls and floors with off-white paint and add colour with curtains and bedlinen in smart blue and taupe striped ticking fabric. Look for chunky, vintage, rustic furniture in weathered, reclaimed wood and use metal luggage trunks as bedside tables – they look smart and are useful for storing spare bedding, too. Keep accessories such as cushions and lamps simple in raw materials such as galvanized steel and brushed linen. Antique clock motifs or elegant script lettering on cushions will give this look a contemporary twist.

Sometimes the simpler decor the better, especially if you want to get a rustic feel, with the understated yet gripping effect. Bring natural beauty to your period property living room with elegant wood textures and surfaces. This 2014 trend is all about mixing different woods together, so choose a pale wood flooring, go for rich, oak wood furniture, then wallpaper your walls with a pale wood-effect digitally-printed wallpaper for a cosy, cabin feel. Keep all the wood completely raw – unpainted and unvarnished – this look is about natural beauty. Keep upholstery simple – a pale grey sofa, a cream rug – some soft, lilac and lavender coloured cushions; The real star of this scheme is the wood, so don’t choose bold or bright accessories or furniture. Perfect if you are planning a new decor for a barn conversion or a country farmhouse!

Can you Match Rustic Table with Contemporary Chairs?

What do you think of this look – rustic vintage dining table set together with plastic contemporary chairs? Theoretically both styles are so different, they are on the opposite ends of the interior esthetics scale – yet in some way this look works, and pulls this rustic table into XXI century home, while still preserving (and accentuating) the natural rustic beauty of exposed wood with clean lines of white contemporary chairs.

What do you think of this look, would this work in your home?

It’s the heritage english look, which was born on a country estate, amongst the hunting lodges and foxes as your nearest neighbours… Natural excuisite beauty of all that’s natural, from the rustic wooden furniture, exposed stone floors, rustic fabrics and home grown food. You can create this look at your home by collecting the wire fruit baskets with wicker details, vintage oil lamps, adding few heritage cushions to your sofa, period wall hangings etc. When it comes to the furniture, you should opt for the vintage or antique wooden pieces, which have been left unpainted, exposing the rustic look of the wood. The wood is one of the materials, that looks better with age, as the years add a distinctive charm to wooden tables, chairs and wardrobes. That’s why antique pieces are often more expensive than new furniture! That also means, that if the piece survived last 100 years looking stunning, it will last for another 100, so you’re investing in something you won’t have to replace in a long time, if ever!

Victorian Pembroke Table – Appreciating the Beauty of a Rustic Wood

Victorian Pembroke Table - Appreciating the Beauty of a Rustic Wood

You can show me the finest examples of painted upcycled furniture, and although I do love some of these pieces, there’s nothing more superior for me that the natural beauty of rustic wood. The nature worked very hard to create magnificent shadings of the wood, it’s a real shame to cover it with paint! When you consider that the oak grows 200 years before it’s ready to be made into furniture, you appreciate this wood. For me, the vintage oak furniture, with the signs of wear and patination is the most beautiful. So when I saw this 19th century Victorian Pembroke Table at today’s auction, I knew it’s really unique. The top isn’t perfectly smooth, there are lines showing the hand work of the person creating the table. It tells you a story, even the little discolouration on the top adds an interest, like a little wrinkle, that hides a story of a frown or a smile. It’s truly beautiful, and this antique oak drop leaf table will make the most stunning feature in the rustic farmhouse kitchen, especially when it’s teamed with contrasting neon bright cushions on the country cottage chairs. It really works, and when the rustic patinated wood is set against the modern clean fresh colours, the effect is truly striking!
